Critics Consensus

Errol Flynn thrills as the legendary title character, and the film embodies the type of imaginative family adventure tailor-made for the silver screen.

It is cinematic pageantry at its best, a highly imaginative telling of folklore in all the hues of Technicolor.

A+

The archetypal Hollywood swashbuckler… everything big-screen derring-do should be: rousing, lighthearted, witty, romantic, colorful, moralistic, and richly satisfying… [Flynn is] the quintessential Robin Hood, jaunty, dashing, and fearless.

Errol Flynn’s best, Technicolor’s best, one of Warner’s best, and, heck, even one of Hollywood’s best.

Yet see beyond the tights and the (glorious) Technicolor and this is still a supremely entertaining adventure with some sword fights that rival any fight sequence...

I grew up under my. father's tutelage loving Errol Flynn & this is by far is greatest film. The technicolor cinematography is lush and the outdoor settings in"Sherwood Forest," actually a Warner's ranch lot are wonderful. The entire cast, Hale, Rathbone &bin particular the gravely voiced Eugene Palette as "Give me back my mutton joint" Friar Tuck are fabulous. Of the many films Flynn & De Havilland did together, this was the finest. The subtle growth of the love between them in divine. The sword fighting scenes are superb, w/ an amazing use of shadow in the climatic match between Flynn & Rathbone & Ian Hunter as Richard the Lionhearted is regal. All in all a great swashbuckler not to be missed!! Orin P. Domenico
