When a western Pennsylvania auto plant is acquired by a Japanese company, brokering autoworker Hunt Stevenson (Michael Keaton) faces the tricky challenge of mediating the assimilation of two clashing corporate cultures. At one end is the Japanese plant manager (Gedde Watanabe) and the sycophant (Sab Shimono) who is angling for his position. By the end, it's curiously unformed, almost a blueprint for another movie.

Its tone swings violently from pratfall to preachment, from an indictment of featherbed laziness to an extended beer-commercial celebration of the mythical American worker.

Drawn from real life, the conflict between cultures is good for both a laugh and a sober thought along the way.

A delicate balance of American bravado and Japanese rigidity achieved as much through dramatic conviction as comic verve. Remarkably and refreshingly human and vulnerable work from Michael Keaton and Gedde Watanabe elevates this into an unsung 1980s gem.

One of the forgotten films on Ron Howard’s resume, yet a far better bet than such later dogs as The Dilemma, Inferno, and Hillbilly Elegy.

It's a strange film, first because it's a comedy, but it feels more like a corporate video to boost production. However, in the end, it isn't. It's a message to two cultures so opposed that it's hard to believe they can work together. The problem is that it falls short in every way.

Thoughtful, charming, optimistic, if not a little ridiculous. It was definitely entertaining and had some funny moments. Worth seeing as a late night romp, keep expectations in check though.
