In order to help bring Nazis to justice, U.S. government agent T.R. Devlin recruits Alicia Huberman, the American daughter of a convicted German war criminal, as a spy. As they begin to fall for one another, Alicia is instructed to win the affections of Alexander Sebastian, a Nazi hiding out in Brazil. When Sebastian becomes serious about his relationship with Alicia, the stakes get higher, and Devlin must watch her slip further undercover.

Critics Consensus

Sublime direction from Hitchcock, and terrific central performances from Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant make this a bona-fide classic worthy of a re-visit.

It's completely hypnotic: from the twisting strands of a plot defying us fully to trust anyone, to those Hitchcock specials, the shots and scenes where the camera too is a lethal conspiracist.

The virtuoso sequences -- the long kiss, the crane shot into the door key -- are justly famous, yet the film's real brilliance is in its subtle and detailed portrayal of infinitely perverse relationships.

Notorious is a technical marvel, as is the case for many of Hitchcock’s films, but the special effects are the kind meant to remain hidden rather than call attention to themselves...

While he squeezes very good performances from Grant and Bergman in unlikeable roles, this movie has and will be remembered more for its tricks than its substance.

Notorious has stood the test of time and deserves the labels of both a classic and one of Hitchcock’s most formidable early American productions.

I found it difficult to understand the dialogue (probably because it's such an old film) and I thought more attention could've been paid to Sebastian's character, but the charming performances by Bergman and Grant carried it through.

Notorious, another perfect film from the great Hitchcock. The guy is so goated that he can combine three genres in one film, and every genre turns out to be a masterpiece. He gave us a perfect love story, a great thriller, and an amazing suspense story with political motives. The ending, with its dark comedy, made it even more perfect. The screenplay was great, and the runtime was perfect. Overall, a masterpiece and an all-time great movie. It was also one of the earliest spy films to be so brilliantly crafted and perfectly executed.

Should be spoken about as much as Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho... Hitchcock is at the top of his game here, and he utilizes his three stars to perfection.

4.5 stars; The master at work. Espionage was a favorite topic of Mr. Hitchcock. Even though this is an earlier Hitchcock film, he doesn't disappoint with his skill of milking every second of intrigue and suspense from the story. In this 1946 classic, he had already mastered the multi-focus zoom lens. In one scene, the camera zooms from a high second-story wide-angle view of a ballroom full of guests all the way down to a very tight shot of a key grasped in the hand of Ms. Bergman... pure genius. Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman provide great chemistry with a torrid love between them that has to be buried in support of their spy agency mission. As always, Alfred hitchcock hits the entertainment bullseye.
