Doing a period piece on an '80s slasher budget was a doomed idea. Go to Full Review

Focusing more on the horror contained within Leroux's original story, this version is a wickedly ghastly and blood-soaked tale of obsession that allows Robert Englund the room to do what he does best as a performer- go nuts. Go to Full Review

B P @Bradster69 5h Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more Jason H @RT50328122 Mar 11 Excellent makeup FX by Kevin Yagher, See more Ondre T @ImTheBestCritic Feb 25 A visual treat for fans of Robert Englund but yearning for a more gory take and much less romantic version of the classic. Great performances by the cast throughout, especially Jill Schoelen and Englund. Even an early small role for Molly Shannon before her SNL days. Love the modern time travel twist that goes from the 80's in the big city back to Victoria-era London. The Jack the Ripper atmosphere adds to the creepiness. A movie, especially for me, whose charm is overlooked towards the end of the 1980's. If you haven't had the opportunity to enjoy this film and you're a fan of horror period pieces, lots of grotesque practical effects along the lines of Nightmare on Elm Street and Hellraiser, and especially if you want to check out Englund in one of his peak performances, don't hesitate, watch it tonight. See more Mitch C @PrimetimeMitch Oct 2 As a horror of the time, this is very watchable. It has the dark, gothic aesthetics and some nice practical effects, plenty of 80s blood on display. Robert Englund works hard as always but the movie's poster has too many Freddy vibes and even mentions him in a tagline which I feel is misinformed when taking off a famous old horror tale. The original is made for its era and builds a beautiful tragic suspense. This one in true latter day fashion is generous from the off with glimpses of Erik Destler in his grotesque form ever present. There is no big reveal as the first made timeless which is a shame. I do like the fresh take on the story by jumping in time and the Jack The Ripper-esque setting off Victorian London is always nice. Sadly, it isn't quite as impactful as it should be and often feels a little dismal and void of charm. See more sai s @RT41485856 07/04/2025 An older movie that does show its age, but it's also uniquely dark and unsettling. All of the actors played their roles well and it had that touch of 80's camp. I also like how the ending wasn't predictable. Give this a shot if you get some downtime. See more Kasondra S @RT11771208 06/09/2025 Loved the plot. Robert Englund was amazing.
