In Seattle during the era of grunge music, the lives and relationships of a group of young people, all living in the same apartment building, go through a period of flux. Among them are waitress and aspiring architect Janet (Bridget Fonda), who finds herself obsessed with bad boy musician Cliff (Matt Dillon) ; Linda (Kyra Sedgwick), an emotionally fragile environmentalist on the look-out for love; and Steve (Campbell Scott), a quintessential nice guy who studies traffic patterns.

Critics Consensus

Smart, funny, and engagingly scruffy, Singles is a clear-eyed look at modern romance that doubles as a credible grunge-era time capsule.

It's like a catalog of everything Crowe had to offer back in the early 1990s, from detailed evocations of place and time to the characters' pronouncements about popular culture.

This is one happy-ending romance that doesn't feel forced. You can't help getting into the spirit of it.

This is romantic comedy of the wispiest kind, but the picture is generous, graceful, and consistently funny.

For all of the director-writer's hipness, there isn't much life in Singles, a wearying if occasionally witty look at life after college in the troubling years of twentysomething.

There’s a particular kind of loneliness that only exists in your twenties, when everyone’s looking for love but nobody quite knows what to do with it. Somewhere between the coffee shops, the mixed tapes, and the missed connections, you realize growing up is mostly just learning how to let someone in. A time capsule of a generation trying to find its rhythm, and each other.

Having not seen this movie in twenty years, I'm surprised by how well it holds up. Having lived through the era, it's easy to see that Singles offers a somewhat cartoonish version of Seattle and the grunge scene, but the characters remain likable, the performances are strong, and Matt Dillon's wardrobe is nearly worth the price of admission on its own. The film leans a little too heavily on familiar Hollywood romantic-comedy conventions, yet its charm is undeniable. A great watch, elevated by one of the best soundtracks of the 1990s.

Generally not a fan of this genre of directionless, ensemble, 'hangout' movies similar to this. But i did find the characters unique and quirky enough to mostly enjoy this.

What is supposed to be a vignette that captures a moment for a generation in Seattle that changed American culture never quite lives up to the promise. It is plotless and lacks any broader point than, "Love is complicated." The quirky Crowe dialogue crosses over into cheesy at points.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE. This is my newest favorites movie. I loved how there were different stories we could follow along with and I loved how every story had its own ending. This movie generally gave me goosebumps at times and almost even made me cry. It was amazing and I definitely recommend it.
