Jacob B @RT48293763 Oct 2, 2026 I’ll never understand why, if a screen writer wants to throw away 95% of the novel on which his screenplay will be based (and also erase any thematic links to the novel as well) , then why not just write an original story?! This film retains almost nothing from the novel other than the title , having next to nothing to do with it in terms of plot nor character. Balzac’s complex themes and biting insight into society are thrown away in favor of making the film palatable to fans of light-comedic-costume-dramas. The biggest sin though is that it is a colossal bore! It’s overstuffed with exposition, dialogue that tries to be witty but fails, and a plot and characters that seem to be trying too hard to engage…and never do. Nice costumes and cinematography do not a good film make. Whoever thought they knew better than Balzac was terribly mistaken. Very well photographed with splendid visual elements from the period. A tale about money, power, yearning and naked behinds. On Prime with excellent image and sound. The angle the director was able to see is amazing. The roles of the actors in the film were very special. I liked this movie very much.
