Unemployed, homeless and suffering from a debilitating injury, Neale Donald Walsch finds himself at the lowest point of his life. Then he receives divine inspiration and turns his dialogues with the Almighty into a best-selling series of books.

Critics Consensus

At some point in the conversation, God must have asked for a subtler, deeper film.

A coda after the closing credits, encouraging divine dialogues in general, does little to dispel the hagiographic aftertaste.

A terminally muddled movie, uncertain as to whether it's promoting Neale, God, Mammon, Putnam Books or the capitalist exploitation of spiritual need.

Although Stephen Simon's film has the mawkish trappings of an inspirational tale, its unseemly emphasis on monetary matters makes Walsch seem less interested in the spiritual possibilities of his celestial networking skills than their financial benefits.

God speaks with Walsch's own voice, the point being, of course, that God is you. God is me. God is a hobo and a douchebag and a blowhard named Neale Donald Walsch.

The film is professionally mounted, smoothly constructed and carried with ease by Czerny's assured performance.

Resembles a vanity project that looks as though every frame was submitted by producer-director Simon to Mr. Walsch for his approval.

I am frankly shocked at the many poor reviews of this movie. CWG is an extremely deep and well done examination of the zeitgeist of the mid 2000's in the PNW of the USA, the vagaries and the role of luck in a person's outcomes and experiences in life, the desperation felt by so many who are unheard in our society, and the various inequalities and injustices that even now in May of 2020 - 14 years later - are tearing our country apart. Anyone with half a heart for the pain and suffering of other human beings can't watch this movie without shedding a tear or at the very least reflect deeply on a personal level the quality of the arc of humanity - who are we really? This movie sheds a painful but true light on that question.

A true Hearted movie about one man struggle for lifes purpose or message. The message being God lives within all of us, and no matter what is going on in your life you can always call on him for the answers. God talks to us all the time, some of us choose not to listen. when you listen and love God opens up the doors for us.

The negative reviews are not an accurate reflection of the movie. I think they reflect reluctance to seem sappy by approving of the subject matter. The movie is not corny or self-promotional, as I expected, and Henry Czerny is really very good as Neale Donald Walsch.

Well intentioned but a ham-fisted, overlong, cheesy and dull screenplay weighs down the movie.
