John S @RT07700383 4d This TV adaptation of the 1997 eponymous play by David Haig not only distorts history, but it also caricatures Kipling as a hysterical buffoon, while suggesting that he forced his son John (who was never known as 'Jack' by his relatives) to enlist. John Kipling did not need his father's encouragement. Kipling had not met with King George V before the war, and the poem he recites at the end of the film, although probably inspired by the loss of John at the battle of Loos in September 1915, was written in memory of a young sailor, Jack Cornwell, killed at sea during the battle of Jutland in 1916. David Haig gave an excellent portrayal of Kipling in the era of war glory for king and country. Radcliff gave an outstanding performance and proved that he could work outside the Potter mold.
