Critics Consensus

Despite fine work by an appealing cast, It's Complicated is predictable romantic comedy fare, going for broad laughs instead of subtlety and nuance.

The movie won't take you to the top of the mountain or leave you with memories and references for discussion, but you won't be bored if you see it. Without compromising my standards, I can give this film an unqualified plus. Go to Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Sep 11, 2017

It's [writer/director Nancy Meyers'] typical, though smart, romantic comedy for a more mature audience. But, unlike Something's Gotta Give, there are no Oprah-like a-ha moments, which made it really quite unspecial and fall sorta flat. Go to Full Review Jonathan F. Richards Film.com Jan 15, 2010

It's really not all that complicated. But it is entertaining. It's pure, simple fun, with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin playing Doris Day and Rock Hudson as they might have been if they had ruled in the sexually knowing oughts, instead of the virginal ear Go to Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Aug 28, 2023

It’s Complicated has an effortless appeal, giving you exactly what you want in a form that wouldn’t work without its stars. Go to Full Review Emma Clark-Dow The Post NZ Oct 21, 2022
It’s Complicated does what it says on the box – tells the story of a complicated, awkward and hilarious relationship, while also celebrating love and sex of an older generation, instead of leaving the passion to the under 25-year-olds. Go to Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Nov 29, 2020

See more Thyaagu C @Thyaagu Aug 14, 2026 A little messy, a little warm, a little ridiculous - basically, adulthood with good lighting. Could have been better, still worth a watch!! See more moon S @moon90 Jun 6, 2026 kinda poorly written, unrealitic in some cases. "ok cast" meryl carried the movie See more Christian K @ckacar May 22, 2026 Extremely watchable and light, The main takeaway is Meryl Streep has one the nicest kitchens I've seen and is somehow complaining about it So of course she is building a new even better, bigger kitchen. See more Pamela A @PamelaJ Feb 14, 2026 Love this movie, not the end. Have seen 3 times, if I watched again I would turn off before the end.
