Critics Consensus

This late-period Harrison Ford actioner is full of palpable, if not entirely seamless, thrills.

This pulsating political actioner should prove cathartic for mainstream viewers who yearn for a decisive, gutsy executive branch of government.

Air Force One ultimately isn’t so much “Die Hard on a plane” (Fly Hard?) as much as it’s a Top Gun for grown-ups -- military hardware in the service of a red-white-and-blue chest thumper.

Directed by Wolfgang Peterson this high octane thriller sees Harrison Ford in the role of president take on Soviet terrorist while there have been many aeroplane heist movies in the past Harrison Ford delivers his unique style of wit and charm and delivers a presidential performance. All in all well it’s not a good movie it is a brilliant popcorn Movie ideal for those Saturday nights, great fun really enjoyed it. Strap yourself in.

A smart hostage thriller with a stacked cast, including Harrison Ford in one of his last action roles while in his prime, Air Force One may have been all the more fondly remembered if it had better visual effects to hold up its stakes, and especially its final moments.

Greetings from Lithuania. "Air Force One" (1997) is a pure fun in terms of action adventure films. It is a "Die Hard" rip off of course, but it has a great political spin on it. In a league of movies like "Under Siege", "Speed", "Die Hard" - this one come close. Acting was fantastic from Harrison Ford who is the star of the film, and gives a star performance. Gary Oldman is great as a villain, but his Russian language in here is the worst I've ever heard in any movies - period (2026). Actor of this caliber should have done it better. Sound design in this movie was done amazingly. I've watched this movie in 2026 with Dolby Atmos on my 7.1.4 and it has outstanding sound design. Special effects do hold and they are great here. Overall, packed with a terrific editing, sound design, acting and a great job from a late great Wolfgang Petersen "Air Force One" is a superbly fun adventure action film. One of the more memorable action films from the 90's.

Films a lot better than it seemed. The action was raw, the performances were pretty good and it really doesn't deserve the "R" rating. 7/10, just good.
