Henry D @Henry_Domke 4 days ago About 20 minutes in, Lorna turned to me and said, "I think the actors are ad-libbing. I don’t think there’s a script. It’s going nowhere." We quit at that point. No more Eric Rohmer films for us. See more

Kevin L @Lakeman Jun 8, 2025 Some people resign themselves to being single. It's not about being alone, as they have friends/acquaintances to enjoy life with. But the endless effort involved in establishing and maintaining a couple's relationship can be more tedious and a hassle than it's ultimately worth. This is esp. true if such effort has been made numerous times only to amount to short-term flings or the realization after some time that you're a bad fit. They get into our own routines and preferences on how to spend our time, where, and who with. And then so many just come to be comfortable being alone most of the time. And then they make excuses, though often based on those past experiences rather than being so cynical, for not trying to find someone new. Such is the setting here to a real for Rohmer's "A Tale of Autumn". Wonderful performances all around; esp. from Rivière and Romand. They're authentic in conveying a close, longtime freindship. I was annoyed mostly by the daughter/teacher plot line. Bit of a cliche, and not needed, imo. And it's Rohmer in the French countryside, so of course it's lovely. 3.4 stars See more

Dec 9, 2021 In Autumn Tale, the centre of Rohmer's world seems to shift from the moralist, who is self-conscious but hesitant in his actions, to the reverie of the imagination, who prefers to escape the pain of choice. It may be that this is a natural consequence of the characters' advancing age, but the alternate nature of the film suggests that, while there is no way of knowing their past, the status quo has almost certainly been reached out of consistent escapism. In addition to the recurring parallels of solitude - defensiveness, initiative - passivity (Magali) and realistic obsession - missed opportunity (Isabella) in Rohmer's film, this film adds a discursive element of control - conformity (two parallel pairs of subterfuges). Those who succeed are light and subtle, those who fail are strong and straightforward, and apparent conformity requires a hidden control, another form of self-referential life story from the director.
