See more Wayne K @WayneKelso Aug 10 The swansong for legendary director Sydney Lumet, Before The Devil Knows You're Dead is a stylish and intense crime thriller featuring a carnival of awful characters doing awful things. The acting standout, unsurprisingly, is Hoffman, a man who excelled in making even the worst individuals seem sympathetic and even likeable. It’s a deep performance, with so much communicated solely through his body movements and facial expressions. He’s well supported by Ethan Hawk as a character who’s also despicable but for different reasons. The heist at the centre of it invites us into the family’s fractured dynamic, and you get the sense that the Hanson’s were always on the edge. It’s the rare film where an out of sequence structure actually works to its advantage, as we get to the see the build up and fall out from different perspective, many of which bleed into each other. It might not be Lumet’s most acclaimed or successful movie, but it’s one that’s more than worthy of bearing his name. See more Banke D @RT95775496 Aug 9 Fantastic! A must see! This is one of those movies where it’s just one bad decision after another with some really dysfunctional people, and disastrous outcomes. No real redeeming characters. It did Keep my attention. The ending fell a little flat since we don’t find out what happens to Hank, Ethan Hawke’s character.
