May 7, 2015 A wonderful gothic piece about a local merchant worn out by family & financial struggles who in the best of the moment murders a Jewish merchant. The film beautifully centers on his conscience & when ever he hears bells it triggers his guilt even further (since the murdered victim was wearing bells) The film is short but well made & Lionel Barrymore was truly a screen sensation & added such expression to the role. Boris Karloff is superb as the Mesmerist also. See more

Nov 1, 2010 This movie combines elements from other stories, but it's supposed to be based on Poe's The Bells poem. I didn't understand the ending, but the rest of the movie was okay. Overall a so-so film. See more

Feb 19, 2010 A boring movie that didnt really pick up until after Mathias killed the rich Polish man See more

Mar 13, 2009 Lesser known silent film based on the French play and inspired by the Edgar Allen Poe poem. Good photography and good acting in this formula "morality tale." The story is kind of like 'The Tell Tale Heart' except the murderer hears bells instead of a beating heart. See more
