Critics Consensus

Eddie Murphy remains appealing as the wisecracking Axel Foley, but Beverly Hills Cop II doesn't take him -- or the viewer -- anywhere new enough to justify a sequel.

Any comedy [as] good [as Beverly Hills Cop] warrants a better follow-up than this, and I can’t understand why audiences didn’t feel cheated by this second-rate retread.

It’s possible Scott felt he had nothing to work with. The film’s plot, such as it is, barely exists...

Why do filmmakers try to improve on the original with louder music, bigger stunts, grosser situations? Such questions come to mind on viewing Beverly Hills Cop II, Paramount's attempt to renew its 1985 gold mine.

[For] all the recycled themes and storytelling beats, it’s hard to deny Tony Scott’s signature visual prowess injected into this sequel. The movie also benefits from higher stakes, better action set pieces and a killer soundtrack.

... "Beverly Hills Cop II" should feel like more of the same, yet it still manages to become its own story.

The only real reason to be here is for Faltermeyer and iconic theme. Eddie isn't being very funny, and the story is just a whatever.

I saw this before the first one as a kid and thought it was better then and still do. Yeah it's more of the same but that's exactly what people wanted. I'd say it's the best action comedy of all time with Eddie Murphy at his prime along with a great supporting cast, great visuals from Tony Scott and another killer electro 80s soundtrack from Harold Faltermyer. It's just quintessential 80s. If your feeling nostalgic this is like a line of cocaine.
