Critics Consensus

Directed with a razor-sharp eye for character by Rohan Kanawade, Cactus Pears is an understated romance that gracefully pulls out the prickles from grief.

Save for a noisy outburst from Balya’s dad, who remains determined to marry his son off, Kanawade resists melodrama throughout, puppeting heartstrings with intimate gestures and dreams.

Here is a really impressive directorial debut from Mumbai film-maker Rohan Kanawade: tender, subtle, candid, scrupulously observed.

Many scenes are done in wide-shot and in long, continuous takes. This seems to be done because Kanawade wants us to sit and stew in these moments. Use of mostly wide shots does create a distancing effect from the characters in a literal and emotional way.

Sabar Bonda, the Marathi film that won a prestigious honour at Sundance, is either a poetic exploration of the road not taken or a pretentious try-hard desperate to feel important.

Very quiet and slow-moving, almost like a documentary about life in an impoverished rural community. The story gradually follows the family, and the main character himself, as they come to accept that he is gay, and shows how much he gains from the simple affection of his boyfriend. The exotic setting and beautifully photographed, high-resolution images added value, but overall the movie was too subdued to make much of an impact.

Quiet, observant, empathetic. Describes both the movie and how it lulls you into being, a few minutes in.

Moved at a decent pace. Really moving story of not only the romantic relationship between two men but also the love between a mother and her son. Strongly recommend.
