Jared Eisenstat Film Comment Magazine Sep 15, 2014
In many ways, Canopy is closer to a fairy tale than a war film, its soldier like a hero on a perilous, mystical journey through a primordial forest, with a sort of pre-linguistic logic guiding the action. Go to Full Review
Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Sep 11, 2014
A brave experiment in stripped-down, visceral filmmaking, writer-director Aaron Wilson's World War II drama "Canopy" is ultimately upended by its minimalist conceit. Go to Full Review
Nicole Herrington New York Times Aug 28, 2014
While not much is said in the Australian director Aaron Wilson's small-scale first feature, "Canopy," the film conveys volumes about war and humanity. Go to Full Review

Canopy functions as a good way for Wilson to establish himself as a talented director and craftsman, but there's very little to go on other than his technical skills. Go to Full Review

Though filmmakers had difficulty obtaining permits to shoot in the rainforest, it's impossible to think of it occurring elsewhere. Every element of this film is intricately combined to effectively draw the audience into their world. Go to Full Review

The opposite of overreaching, the approach is refreshingly single-minded and a showcase for the director's craft... Go to Full Review

Frank F @RT84165188 Nov 16, 2025 An Australian pilot, who was shot down, and a wounded Chinese freedom fighter, meet and are struggling to stay alive in the jungles of Singapore, while being hunted by Japanese soldiers. There is no dialogue since they each speak a different language and no subtitles. The only communication is facial expression and gestures, but they learn to understand and help each other. It is slow-moving and not for everyone, especially if you like car chases, fighting, sex, and well-dressed men and women. Thumbs up! See more
Edward K @Edko426 Mar 21, 2023 Didn't like it. I love war movies and I was interested to see this at first, but it is was disappointing. It's really dull, with no dialog and really no plot. I wanted a better ending. I was really hoping it would improve. I cannot see the basis for any awards it won????? I don't get it. It's sad and disappointing and dull. See more
James S @RT14271195 Mar 17, 2023 Canopy is filmed in the spirit of Castaway but without any dialogue or ingenuity. It reminds us why silent film failed. See more
Jun 1, 2021 Tedious. The type of film that Arty farty types will describe as 'suspensful', 'beautifully filmed' etc. - it is neither. Very very slow, little action, no dialogue (apart from an exchange of names). If you want to make a similar film, strap a video camera to your waist and wander through a forest for an hour on your own - the resulting film will be far better. See more
Paul G @RT67423558 Feb 20, 2021 Very atmospheric. Yes there is not much of a story but the soundtrack is fantastic and you do "feel" like you are in a war zone. The ending was a slight mystery though. See more
Mar 25, 2018 This movie resonates with the little I could squeeze from my father who fought in the jungle of Bougainville as an 17/18 year old in the AIF. No talking, often only meters from an unseen Japanese enemy who were also trying to analyse every sound to detect their enemy. Stalking each other to kill or be killed. To all who delivered this movie - thanks To those who prefer Transformers and Pearl Harbour - that's OK if that's what you need See more
