James B @Jsb11971 Feb 21 You might have to be a less than popular kid at this exact time in history to get this movie but it was 1000 percent spot on in its tropes. Which weren’t trope. They were real. It didn’t showcase all of the then high school archetypes but it didn’t have to and that’s not a reason to be critical. It was focused primarily on two. And it nailed them. Patrick Dempsey was a master class as a late teen in this role and launched his career. You felt his pain even when he unintentionally created the entire sequence of events that led to his own downfall. She grasping for her personal story not one defined by others or another abusive boyfriend. The movie is made more poignant by his rise to stardom outside the movie and her fall into obscurity and then oblivion, and sadly domestic abuse and eventual death. When you see what they both became in real life it makes this movie even more emotionally resonant See more Swaus G @SwausGebouwen Feb 14 Can't Buy me Love is one of the very most quintessential high school flicks of the 20th century. From a movie history standpoint, it's a must-see. It is also an absolutely perfectly paced movie, and there's a meaningful moral to its story. It challenges the viewer by presenting a protagonist who journeys from naivity and insecurity to moral reprehensibilty before a fall from grace forces him to realign himself. The acting's good, the way it looks holds up so well, and the usage of tropes is delicious. So don't listen to the naysayers... they must have not turned on their 'relax and enjoy the movie' brain for this one. There's nothing offensive other than fart jokes and the hamming-up of high school bullying. I came away from this film feeling truly satiated, like I'd been on an adventure, and you won't get that from many other rom-coms.
