See more Christian M @chriss17eu Aug 20 God and his little games of convenience- A parody of 'The Exorcist' filtered through 2000s effects, with influences from 'The Matrix' and 'Die Hard'. 'Constantine' works best when it stops discussing faith and becomes supernatural action. Keanu Reeves is perfect as a sarcastic demon hunter who smokes, shoots, and exorcises demons. Tilda Swinton, however, drives me insane: Gabriel is irritating rather than compelling. My biggest problem is the theology. The idea that God has a plan for everyone feels like fate disguised as religion. Why should suicide lead to Hell while God can forgive atrocities against others? And if God creates circumstances to guide our choices, isn’t that manipulation? Freedom starts looking like a fucking fairy tale. Still, the visual imagination works wonderfully. Hell, demons, guns, and religious mythology create a bizarre combination. As philosophy, it frustrates me; as supernatural action, I fucking love it. Director Francis Lawrence’s superhero horror mystery Constantine (2005) is still a blast. I’ve always had fun with this dark and dreary neo-noir style mystery with angels and demons. It’s not really accurate to the comic books, but this is a very cool and bleak picture that is endlessly entertaining. Keanu Reeves is awesome as the brooding, sarcastic, and determined exorcist detective John Constantine. Reeves is so intense and immensely entertaining. Rachel Weisz is insanely sexy and sympathetic as the LAPD detective Angela Dodson. She is very amusing as a chipper lady opposite Keanu’s sullen cynic Constantine. Tilda Swinton is excellent as the Archangel Gabriel with a chip on her shoulder. Peter Stormare steals the entire finale as Lucifer himself. His creepy portrayal of The Devil is iconic and highly amusing. Constantine still rules for Keanu Reeves’ awesome portrayal of John Constantine.
