Born under unusual circumstances, Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt) springs into being as an elderly man in a New Orleans nursing home and ages in reverse. Twelve years after his birth, he meets Daisy, a child who flickers in and out of his life as she grows up to be a dancer (Cate Blanchett). Though he has all sorts of unusual adventures over the course of his life, it is his relationship with Daisy, and the hope that they will come together at the right time, that drives Benjamin forward.

It could have worked, had it ever snapped to life, but it doesn't. It just goes on and on and on and on and on and on. And on. You may even shake your watch to check it is still going. I know I did.

The film was an unqualified success. Few movies lasting nearly three hours with quasi-downbeat material please both audiences and critics, yet it remains low on the lists of Pitt’s, Blanchett’s, Fincher’s, and Roth’s most notable efforts.

The effect, which isn’t fully grasped until absorbed in its entirety, plays like a moody fairy tale, romantic and magical, with flourishes both elegiac and unusual.

As [Benjamin] taught us, “I hope you live a life you’re proud of, [and] if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”

A beautiful meditation on time, love, loss, and the strange business of being alive. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are wonderful, the storytelling is full of heart, and Alexandre Desplat's score stays with you. Bittersweet, moving, and impossible to forget. You never know what life has planned. That's the beauty of it.

A very good film from beginning to end, if you don’t enjoy this movie then you don’t know film.

An ambitious and technically dazzling movie, and Pitt and Blanchett are excellent, but it’s a long, cold, passive film that never quite makes its central theme mean something.

We spend our whole lives trying to outrun time, never realizing it's the moments we wish we could hold forever that make life worth living. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a beautiful reminder that love was never meant to last forever in the way we imagined, only to change us in ways that do. Some people arrive too early, some too late, and some leave a piece of themselves in us that time can never touch. What matters is that we were here, and that we loved.

The concept alone gives this film so much to think about. Watching Benjamin live his life in reverse makes the usual ideas of aging, love, loss and mortality feel strangely different. The deeper message that, no matter how differently we live, death remains the final destination really stayed with me. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett also give strong performances. It can be overly sentimental and a little too long, but the ideas and emotional weight make it worthwhile.
