The result feels a little empty. The humour relies almost entirely on the contrast between the film's dark themes and humdrum British life, as everyone negotiates life-and-death matters with steadfast politeness.

There is a compassionate and highly amusing investment in Edmunds characters but the picture does have its lull in entertainment value at times. Overall, there is a life-affirming message to be learnt from the darkest of holes.

Accurate while being funny. You all know you are thinking like this, but you just won't admit it. I didn't want it to end. If you realize that life is absurd and the only real meaning is what we give it, then you'll enjoy this movie.

A brilliantly funny script brought to life by an excellent cast, with the likes of Tom Wilkinson and Christopher Eccleston bringing their usual depth and humour. I can't understand why so many have given poor reviews when there is so much to recommend this film. From the premise (a suicidal man unlucky in his attempts hiring an assassin to help him succeed) to the wonderful one liners, their delivery and the overall warmth and wit of the film, it is so enjoyably far-fetched and encompasses tragedy, comedy and resolution in 90 packed minutes.
