Critics Consensus

The Emperor's New Groove isn't the most ambitious animated film, but its brisk pace, fresh characters, and big laughs make for a great time for the whole family.

Ingenious action sequences driven by surprisingly little plot lead to a climax full of the transmogrification animation was invented for.

Emperor doesn't aim too high or strain too hard; it is at ease inhabiting its pretty, miniature realm.

Even the most risk-averse, anxiety-possessing children can look at this film and giggle because the film takes Kuzco’s evolution seriously and nothing else, making all the dangerous obstacles and deadly plots farcical and hilarious.

There’s a certain hipness and modernness to the characters and their conversations, providing a curious contrast to the ancient Incan setting, but it’s not enough to set it apart as a notable project.

The Emperor's New Groove is a comedic masterpiece and one of Disney's greatest animated films. With some of the sharpest comedic timing, most quotable dialogue, and most ridiculous characters ever put to screen, this movie is practically flawless. David Spade's performance as Kuzco is hilariously self-centered, Patrick Warburton's Kronk is an absolute legend, and Eartha Kitt's Yzma is one of Disney's most entertaining villains. Every scene is packed with humor, and the film never wastes a single moment. But beneath the absurdity lies a genuinely heartfelt story about humility, friendship, and learning to care about others. The movie manages to deliver a meaningful message without sacrificing a single ounce of its comedy. It's endlessly rewatchable, outrageously funny, and a perfect example of Disney at its best. "Pull the lever, Kronk!"

Funny, hilarious, and imaginative, the Emperor's new groove is a hilarious laugh out loud movie that you must see! I love David Spade, he was very funny. The animation was excellent, precise, and smooth. The voice acting was incredible, and is probably one of the funniest Disney movies I've ever seen! Great watch.

In a time when mad writers were allowed to construct the most fantastical nonsense, this box-office bomb was sad pudding-proof that 'this is why we can't have nice things'. The minutia time jokes about politics, food & infrastructure etc, are as smart and original as anything I've seen. But it's the dichotomous relationships between Cusko and Goodman, as well as Gronk and Yzma that really bring this film home. BOOM BABY!
