This is a terrific movie, with a starring performance by Julia Roberts that's as funny, romantic and justifiably self-confident as any seen on the screen since Hollywood's golden age.

That it works as well as it does -- and it does -- is testimony to both Roberts' pure screen presence and the particular genius of Steven Soderbergh.

At last, those teeth of Julia Roberts have something red to chomp on. Erin Brockovich is her best role to date. She takes it between her choppers and exuberantly draws the juice out of it. Her performance is monumental.

There's really no reason this kind of conventional David-and-Goliath tale should make for such a compelling motion picture, but Soderbergh and Grant smartly mix plenty of humor and unflagging inspiration into the drama.

Erin Brockovich is a powerful and engaging legal drama anchored by a standout performance from Julia Roberts, who brings the title character to life with grit, humor, and emotional depth. Her portrayal makes Erin feel authentic and relatable, transforming what could have been a standard biopic into something far more compelling and human. The screenplay is strong, balancing courtroom-level stakes with grounded, character-driven storytelling. Instead of getting lost in legal jargon, the film focuses on the real people affected by the case, which gives the story emotional weight and clarity. Erin’s journey from struggling single mother to determined advocate feels earned and inspiring throughout. The film also does an excellent job showing persistence in the face of overwhelming odds. Erin is constantly underestimated, but her determination never fades, making her eventual impact even more satisfying. The direction keeps everything accessible and emotionally
