Kristian V @diehard4life Oct 11, 2026 This is an absolute love letter to the Upper Midwest & deer camp culture which never fails to bring me to tears at its climax. From the soundtrack to the visuals, it captures the joy of the passion project that Jeff Daniels created at his Purple Rose theater downstate in the mitten part of MI. To grasp the gravitas of this film requires to first immerse yourself in the truth that it is small theater onscreen. UFOs, pasty pies, wendigo (bearwalk), indigenous spiritualism, DNR power, Euchre & the bumper sticker sloganizing of Up Nort… are as culturally ubiquitous as they are delberately overdrawn in this film. Daniels deserves a monument North of da bridge (Mackinaw) more than any other Michigander. Escanaba is a thesis of cultural anthropology, bathed in humor as throughly as porshupine pesch. To lambast this film is to display an intellect as quantifiably dim as the Soady who shot his buck on the two-holer. Having spent winters in da U.P, I get it, and I am a lifelong ‘Sconnie! See more Landon H @RT82276197 Sep 21, 2025 I think that this film has been lost by those who need to see it most. This is my favorite cult classic and has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It’s great. See more B W @RT69254790 Nov 25, 2024 My dad used to rent the worst movies. So when he popped this in as my friends and I were on our way out to meet some girls, and we were literally stopped in our tracks hand on the doorknob with laughter, I knew it was something special. Years later I showed it to my wife and it became the one movie we would both quote while cackling with glee. It seemed like every year we'd show it to someone, just to see if they thought it as funny as we did, to see if we could be friends or not. She passed away this October after a 7 year battle with cancer. She could split wood. See more Read all reviews
