I like the details of how he made the key to match without getting caught that’s enough intensity right there… See more Chris L @Christoph2000 Jun 25 This might not be a rumination on apartheid South Africa more widely, though that would've given it a boost; as a reminder of how Ian Jenkin masterminded one of the most improbable prison escapes ever seen, it possesses enough knife-edge tension to work. It really is Jenkin's story though, to the extent that his two co-escapees might as well not exist at times. This is especially true of the French(?) third chap who, for reasons I really can't be sure of, was fictionalised and given an invented name (he was actually Alex Moumbaris). Why not fully honour the courage of all three? And those accents...look, I appreciate what a challenge attempting an accurate SA accent presents, but when Ian Hart as Denis Goldberg is the best of the lot you know you're in a heap of trouble. Then there's that totally redundant shot from right after the night guard defecated in the loo. For all its many glaring flaws, however, Escape from Pretoria is a worthwhile tribute to a soul who never let fascism win. The accents were appalling, completely off-putting and grating. This is a South African story voiced by foreigners, and hardly even skimming the surface of what it was all about. Ok purely as a generic prison break, but if you want to understand more of the context it’s set in, there’s got to be far more authenticity. See more Tina-Marie T @RT18065173 02/26/2025 Acting was D class at best, did Harry Potter not have a sequal to act in? The lead actors fell horribly short, South African actors should have been used. The accents, nuances and storyline were amateur at best. The storyline could have been so much more, it barely skimmed the surface, basic opportunities lost. It was nothing less than insulting to the history of the era. The only memorable reaction was the bile in my throat. Netflix should allow South African's to tell their stories.
