Crystal Lake's history of murder doesn't deter counselors from setting up a summer camp in the woodsy area. Superstitious locals warn against it, but the fresh-faced young people -- Jack (Kevin Bacon), Alice (Adrienne King), Bill (Harry Crosby), Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) and Ned (Mark Nelson) -- pay little heed to the old-timers. Then they find themselves stalked by a brutal killer. As they're slashed, shot and stabbed, the counselors struggle to stay alive against a merciless opponent.

Critics Consensus

A grisly campfire tale in slasher form, Friday the 13th delivers a brutal showcase of creative, effects-driven kills that never quite disguises its threadbare plotting or lack of genuine chills.

Cunningham is a methodical, imitative, pedantic artisan who has probably hit a jackpot.

It is cheap and tack and displays no sensibility at all. But it does have craft and it scared the bejusus out of me.

…there’s something nasty waiting in the top bunk, plus some startling kills, and while this franchise fragmented rather quickly once Jason just became a killing machine, this original shocker still has more than enough juice in it to work…

It is implausibly and uninventively worked out, and the result is shoddily dependent on simulating its gory murders with maximum relish.

Movie was good but the theater had the volume on the movie so loud that it was ear piercing and I actually had to go ask them to turn it down. Not sure if they did but it wasnt enjoyable at all. Walked out with a headache.

One of the best classic horror films! I was so glad to see that they brought it back for the holiday! I took my daughter to see it in theater and we had the best time!
