Joseph Mankiewicz directs a film that effortlessly switches between gentle comedy and pathos, melodrama and fantasy. It’s a beguiling charmer.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is one of the most passionately romantic motion pictures I’ve ever seen.

The film's whimsy is a bit heavy-handed and it is short on wit, style and ingenuity. Yet most of it is pleasant enough fun, and pretty to watch.

Less ghost story than romantic fantasy of impossible love, this moody classic from director Joseph Mankiewicz is a refreshingly mature and down to earth bittersweet romance.

The third act is astounding - a heavy-hitting, emotional, dreamy conclusion on par with epic romances like "Wuthering Heights."

The direction is smooth and the script has a relaxed good taste as it deals with piquant situations. Even the bit parts are played with distinction.

Perfectly lovely ghostly romance The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947) ****1/2 THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR is a beautifully crafted romantic fantasy elevated by Gene Tierney's luminous performance and Bernard Herrmann's extraordinary score, which together give the film its enduring magic. Despite its unabashed sentimentality, this charming ghostly love story wins me over every time and remains one of my favorite classic romances. SEE LETTERBOXED FOR FULL REVIEW

What a perfect film which starts out whimsically and ends up seriously with an apt ending. Ok the happy ending was predictable. The whole cast are just right including the bumbling estate agent. Great family film for a wet Sunday afternoon.

I surprised myself by liking it as much as I did. Usually, I'm not a fan of old-fashioned love stories. But this kept me involved. And I loved the ending.

I loved this film when I was young. I just watched it today as an escape--I cried twice! During a 1947 ghost movie! The chemistry between Tierney and Harrison makes this a fantastic romantic story (think Heathcliff and Cathy only in reverse).
