In Stratford-Upon-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare, Miss Capulet and Mr. Montague feud over whose garden is the better. Garden gnomes that decorate each neighbor's flower beds continue the rivalry when the humans aren't looking, and gnomes from the Red Gardens don't get along with those of the Blue Gardens. Then Gnomeo (James McAvoy), a Blue, and Juliet (Emily Blunt), a Red, fall in love, leaving many obstacles to overcome.

Critics Consensus

While it has moments of inspiration, Gnomeo and Juliet is often too self-referential for its own good.

Gnomeo & Juliet stays too low to the ground to become an animated classic, but if there's a fairer midwinter's tale, wherefore art thou?

The juvenile humor and immaturity run rampant, as do several annoyingly hyperactive supporting characters, resulting in a tug-of-war between eye rolling and grimacing.

Gnomeo & Juliet is obviously a playful take on Romeo and Juliet, and the title alone tells you exactly what kind of story you’re getting. Add the Disney-adjacent animation style, garden gnomes, and Elton John music, and you already know this isn’t going to be a traditional Shakespeare adaptation. The general audience may not have embraced this movie, but I honestly enjoyed it. I wouldn’t call it one of the greatest animated films ever made, but I certainly wouldn’t call it one of the worst either. I don’t think it deserves the rotten reputation it has received. The characters are memorable and have plenty of potential to become marketable personalities if they were promoted correctly. Unfortunately, I think the movie missed opportunities with its marketing and never received the attention it could have. What I enjoyed most was the creativity. Taking the classic story and placing it between competing groups of colorful garden gnomes was a fun idea, and the Elton John soundtrack

The worldwide gross is $194,000,000.00 over a production budget of $36,000,000.00. Difference of $158,000,000.00. Rated G. In memory of Dolly Parton (01/19/1946-08/25/2026).

People hate the movie because it alternates the tragedy into something happier, but it actually helps me with tragic thoughts because it makes room for something uplifting. And Elton John’s duet with Lady Gaga was one of my childhood hits, so I personally think it’s underrated. No one has to agree. ♡

Uma animação fraca que esvazia todo o peso do clássico original. Apesar da boa banda sonora do Elton John, o humor é demasiado infantil, a história é previsível e o ritmo cansa muito depressa.
