Critics Consensus

Though a minor entry in Eastwood's body of work, Gran Torino is nevertheless a humorous, touching, and intriguing old-school parable.

It is a flawed movie, vastly overwritten, with characters pointing things out that we've long worked out for ourselves. Still, the self-referentiality of Eastwood's performance ensures that Gran Torino isn't just absorbing, but also moving.

Seeing Eastwood ward off young gangsters was odd... well, but he pulled it off enough.

Though the film feels like a requiem, Kowalski's heart is still defiantly beating.

Gran Torino is a harrowing glimpse into how, depending on the nature of one's past sins, true redemption can sometimes be fait accompli.

Gran Torino is a nuanced picture with incredible heart, humor, and melodramatic themes of acceptance and long-overdue redemption.

Its characters find peace through acts of openness, understanding and sacrifice, and it is these arcs that allow the audience to feel a sense of cathartic peace ourselves.

Very predictable story line, in general pretty bad acting. And Eastwood playing his same old character. No, don't recommend it. Waste of time

Classic Eastwood flick with Classic Eastwood lines and acting. While there is some bad acting in it, it was a good story with wholesome moments.

The fact that Eastwood is still making incredible movies like this when most actors in his age group are either retired or passed away is one of the many reasons why he is such an icon.

What's so hilarious are the memes about "Eastwood not acting" throughout. This is peak boomer content, culturally and emotionally displaced elder heroically self sacrifices for a better good he's only just come to understand. I probably watched half of this in the form of youtube shorts prior to viewing as I'm sure many have lol.

I loved this movie. I’d never heard about it and found it just accidentally, but what a great chance find! It’s gritty and the opposite of a "woke" movie, where masculinity is shown not just as a threat - although there’s plenty of that - but also as a blessing. It’s a movie exposing the difficulties of different cultures adjusting to the West and the West trying to adjust to them: a mirror to the stresses of today. It seems brash but there are subtle hints throughout the film leading up to the explosive and defining end. It’s almost 20 year old overt racism may make it a tough film to watch nowadays but on the other hand the racism is multi layered, not just white, which makes it real. The building up of the gradual relationship and understanding is I think well paced and natural, leading to an absolutely mind blowing finale. It’s a very moving and unforgettable film imo and I recommend it wholeheartedly.
