This is peak boomer content, culturally and emotionally displaced elder heroically self sacrifices for a better good he's only just come to understand. I’d never heard about it and found it just accidentally, but what a great chance find! It’s gritty and the opposite of a "woke" movie, where masculinity is shown not just as a threat - although there’s plenty of that - but also as a blessing. It’s a movie exposing the difficulties of different cultures adjusting to the West and the West trying to adjust to them: a mirror to the stresses of today. It seems brash but there are subtle hints throughout the film leading up to the explosive and defining end. It’s almost 20 year old overt racism may make it a tough film to watch nowadays but on the other hand the racism is multi layered, not just white, which makes it real. The building up of the gradual relationship and understanding is I think well paced and natural, leading to an absolutely mind blowing finale. I'd always heard good things about it but never read anything about it, so my expectations were often subverted.
