In HATCHING, 12-year-old gymnast, Tinja (Siiri Solalinna), is desperate to please her image-obsessed mother, whose popular blog 'Lovely Everyday Life' presents their family's idyllic existence as manicured suburban perfection. One day, after finding a wounded bird in the woods, Tinja brings its strange egg home, nestles it in her bed, and nurtures it until it hatches. The creature that emerges becomes her closest friend and a living nightmare, plunging Tinja beneath the impeccable veneer into a twisted reality that her mother refuses to see.

Critics Consensus

A message movie in a hard horror shell, Hatching perches between beauty and revulsion -- and establishes director Hanna Bergholm as a bright new talent.

Bergholm isn’t exactly subtle about doling out the metaphors, but “Hatching” sustains a fugue state of empathy and unease that puts it within shouting distance of David Lynch, and Solalinna is impressive in the lead...

The themes throughout are vague enough to be interesting, but explicit enough to draw some connections. Toxic relationships, narcissism, puberty, eating disorders, and hidden lives are all themes that are explored pretty adeptly in a tight 1:27 runtime.

Hatching is a strange, gripping watch. Solalinna’s dual performance as Tinja and Alli, alongside Alli’s ever-evolving visual depiction, go a long way towards selling the film’s horror and emotional core.

Instead of merely being a typical creature feature with dazzling practical effects, Bergholm turns her horror into a collection of coming-of-age traumas, piercing metaphors, and psychological ambiguity.

What a bizarre and awesome movie 🎬 I highly recommend seeing this movie. Yes it is subtitled in English, not hard to follow at all. They did an amazing job making this film.

Themes and undertones were understandable. Atmospheric, eerie and scary. The music score elevated the scenes they were in. A good modern creature story.

Was interesting but couldve been much more. They couldve pushed it more but for what they did it was interesting. Liked that it didnt have cheap scares or fake pullback where its a dream haha. More psychological than horror.
