Great movie, I agree with all the praise, but there are two HUGE flaws that are really unnecessary. First, the shootout after the bank robbery...assault rifles firing thousands of rounds around the public including children. There would have been dozens of victims. Worse yet is the ending. The person being chased has a huge advantage. He can hide behind a barrier, wait for Al Pachino to show up, stay behind the barrier and shoot him. Al stupidly steps out into the open, making himself a sitting target, and instead of peaking around the corner and shooting him...De Niro also steps out into the open making himself an easy target also. I’d somehow never seen it, which shocked basically everyone I’ve ever talked to, so my expectations were sky high. Luckily, it delivers. The cast is stacked and every performance hits. What I loved most is how it balances being a gripping crime thriller while also diving deep into the personal lives of both the criminals and the cops. It makes everything feel more real and raises the emotional stakes. The nearly three-hour runtime flew by—I was locked in the whole time. It’s intense, smart, and surprisingly human. Definitely one of those films that sticks with you after the credits roll. Michael Mann turns a cops-and-robbers story into something elegant, melancholy, and deeply character-driven, where action matters but never overwhelms the human obsession underneath it. The famous shootout is still one of the best ever filmed, but what really lasts are the conversations, the silences, and the sense that hunter and hunted are defined by the same loneliness and discipline. Pacino brings wild energy, De Niro brings icy control, and Mann knows exactly how to use both. Long, yes, but never empty.
