Critics Consensus

The beautifully stop-motion animated Isle of Dogs finds Wes Anderson at his detail-oriented best while telling one of the director's most winsomely charming stories.

The director and his hip writing partners (Jason Schwartzman, Roman Coppola, Kunichi Nomura) infuse their imaginary world with winning deadpan humor.

Wes Anderson's latest venture, Isle of Dogs, is another example of the writer/director's editing and camerawork craftsmanship. A triumph of his own Andersonian aesthetic, yet an albatross concerning his appetite for cultural window dressing.

With its beautiful formal imagery, its gallery of hugely likeable canines and its cheerfully crazy plotting, Isle of Dogs really is a unique experience, and a thoroughly enchanting one.

Isle of Dogs is Wes Anderson’s underrated masterpiece, mixing the originality of The Royal Tenenbaums, the visuals of The Grand Budapest Hotel, and the cuteness of Fantastic Mr. Fox.

The USP of Wes Anderson’s films is to turn even the most tried-and-tested indie narrative tropes into a borderline-absurdist adventure. “Isle of Dogs” feels right at home with the rest of his work.

One of the worst animated movies of all time. Critics and an easily led public liked because they couldn't understand it. Uneven. Even the voice actors couldn't save it. Bill M. is crap as always. Stop action may be artistis but it went out 60 years ago.

Fascinating Wes Anderson visual style, as usual, but no particularly engaging characters. Nice political commentary... not one-to-one for a specific event. Ironically, is a bit of anti-cat propaganda, but I guess some animal needs to symbolize the opposing faction LOL.

The political similarities of it and the US had me squirming in my seat. The banishing of dogs akin to the mass deportation of immigrants. Trash island. Truly depressing. One of the only parts I liked was the wasbi poison scene. I couldn’t tell if it was my own depression or the movie that made me want to cry. The stressful pace of this movie had me on edge. Even with all of this, I appreciated the political view. This movie made me think about activism. Wes Anderson definitely has a weird way of doing it. I felt a disgust about my own nation while watching. In all the grief and frustration of the many protagonists there was warm relief of friendship, loyalty and, determination. With almost no antagonist characters but, the mayor, being one. This movie made me uncomfortable. Possibly for the best.
