Luca D @JoeCamel7 Oct 27, 2026 Surprisingly suspenseful and scary for its time. I was not expecting it to be that scary and I was shocked afterwards like I should not have watched it in a dark room in the middle of the night. The climax is worth the wait, the movie stays rather calm until the end when hell breaks loose. I love how old movies clearly don't accept that trauma is real and the main characters just walk off a traumatic event as if nothing happened and life is back to sunshine and rainbows. In the end the sound design and set design plus acting is all really good. The movie does a good job of balancing its thrills and plot, it's not just filled with spooky scenes and jumpscares its clearly a philosophical thriller that uses scares to appeal to a broader audience. Would recommend to thriller and horror fans, spooky season or not, it's worth a watch. See more Xexla M @CriticalMahogany Oct 21, 2026 Isle of the Dead follows a hardheaded, old-school sergeant who finds himself trapped in a quarantine on an island ravaged by plague. What begins as a personal journey to visit his late wife’s resting place soon descends into supernatural horror. The film’s strongest asset is its central character. Stern, intimidating, and uncompromising, the sergeant feels grounded in realism, and the tension between him and those around him is both believable and effective. Unfortunately, the pacing is a major weakness. For a film barely over an hour long, it feels surprisingly sluggish, dragging out its atmosphere until the slow burn becomes a slow crawl. While the premise and dialogue have merit, the story would have benefited from a tighter narrative and a more focused approach. Ultimately, Isle of the Dead has an intriguing concept and a compelling central character, but its uneven pacing keeps it from reaching its potential. There’s a better horror film here, buried under too much build up. See more Robert P @Superbad Oct 5, 2026 Isle of The Dead is a *3* star Movie! See more Homu L @AkemiLord May 3, 2026 Fantastic movie. I really enjoyed watching this. Great film! See more Philip T @RT78369214 Nov 5, 2025 Another Val Lewton horror classic. It's very slow moving but heavy on creepy atmosphere and Boris Karloff shines as a Greek General during the Greek Civil Wars who is desperately trying to keep a small group of people alive on a "haunted island." A slow burn that's light on action but heavy on the creep factor. See more That boi C @RT94044319 Sep 26, 2025 interesting setting and plot, boris is always fun to watch, val lewton hasn’t disappointed in my experience. it’s an interesting take on greek folklore and vampires (i should say vorvolokas) and was creepy without directly incorporating supernatural elements.
