Based on the bestselling novel from Nobel Prize-winner Kazuo Ishiguro and written and directed by Academy-Award® winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), Klara and the Sun introduces audiences to Klara (Jenna Ortega), an Artificial Friend who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home. When Klara meets Josie (Mia Tharia), each immediately senses a kindred spirit in the other. Critics Consensus

Flattening the nuanced ideas of its acclaimed source material with a tonally broad approach, Klara and the Sun aims to be endearing and inspiring but winds up cloying and twee.

Audience Says

Elevated by Jenna Ortega’s luminous performance, Klara and the Sun may occasionally fly too close to its Celestial flame, but its poignant exploration of grief and striking imagery make for a memorable experience.

This good-hearted movie works hard to conjure enchantment from its writing, directing and acting power, but a warming charm is all it can deliver.

Yet the premise is far more existential than Waititi’s adaptation makes it.

If Waititi were willing to make Klara’s situation a bit more forlorn, or to press a bit harder when pointing out the futility of her efforts, the movie might have worked as a satire of Hollywood’s morale-priming clichés.

The film continually feels like bad sleight of hand, where the audience is promised more depth only to have it repeatedly snatched away.

This feels like a real return to form for Taika Waititi. The comedic elements are there, and they all work, thanks to the frankly astounding performance of Ortega.

For all its tonal hiccups, Klara and the Sun can be simultaneously devastating and heartwarming.

Great movie. My sister and I both enjoyed it. Definitely recommend if you enjoy a bit of sci-fi, family drama, and can imagine an artificial being having a positive impact on humans. The ending was different. My sister felt that there were loose ends but the ending seemed symbolic to me and made perfect sense.

It had potential but it squanders it. It started out fun but by the end it’s all over the place. Such a wasted journey

The movie is definetely fresh. Havent read the book so I dont know how different it is. I can say that the movie is engaging and show topics and point of views that are interesting, its not dumb. A shame the movie didnt convey a deeper mesaage, it is happy just showing. Made me wanna read the book. Btw there are movies that deviate a lot from the book and ate still good like Starship Troopers or Nolans Odyssey.
