What to Know

Critics Consensus

Knight of Cups finds Terrence Malick delving deeper into the painterly visual milieu he's explored in recent efforts, but even hardcore fans may struggle with the diminishing narrative returns.

On a single, devotedly attentive viewing, I couldn't grok the logic of these headings beyond the lamely prosaic. Go to Full Review

Powerful and Soul-shaking....Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups is philosophical fiction at its finest. Go to Full Review

Malick’s simplicity actually works in his benefit (at least for the most part) when it comes to those ideas and Lubeski’s beautiful imagery helps resonate the heart of those ideas. Go to Full Review

John S. @andypanda2019 1d Malick’s work predominates with visuals. They are often quite powerful, perhaps as a documentarian. Malick has a style (and it is a good one) that has informed him many years. The problem is that he often seems the only one who understands what he is saying. His visual style often cannot convey the plot and intricacies of his characters. We have seen perhaps nearly every one of his visual devices. His best hope is that we somehow discern the shadow side of his mind. They seem so much like those defunct subliminal messages from bygone days where something like a fleeting product placement — a few film frames of Coke — quickly passes sight unseen, absent a subsequent visit to the concession stand. All we have left is a seemingly cliched visual vocabulary, repeating word forms and grammar, unintelligible semiotics lacking a requisite decoder. See more Kenneth L @RT28484096 Mar 2 As a Terrance Malick fan, I enjoyed this film. But, I am not sure it will stick with me like many of his other films. See more Fred B @fredinMA Jan 24 For the most part beautifully filmed and edited. The Tarot overlay is interesting but ultimately nothing held the visual stream together enough to keep my interest. I fast forwarded to the last few scenes and got the impression that Malick had totally lost interest in the project by the end. See more Scott E @RT19581245 Oct 19 It created a strong feeling. See more Natalie P @nprue66 Oct 12 Horrible! No plot to be found. A waste of film, $$ and people’s time! Life is too short to spend any fraction of it watching this meaningless piece of crap!! Burn this poor excuse of a film! See more Dena J @RT50321089 Oct 11 It is like a perfume ad that goes on and on. I was drawn in by the dream like beautiful people and backdrops. Visually it is a feast but there isn't much story or dialog so leaves you empty. Christian Bale's character smiles smugly throughout the entire movie and it gets annoying. See more Read all reviews
