Eszter Tompa delivers a restrained and compelling performance as Orsolya, a woman trapped between her legal duties and her conscience. Radu Jude’s minimalist direction, long takes, dry humor, and raw mobile-phone cinematography give the film a distinctive documentary like atmosphere. Its greatest strength is its refusal to offer easy answers, though the deliberately slow pacing and extended conversations may test some viewers’ patience. By contrasting old buildings with modern development, the film turns a personal tragedy into a broader reflection on society, responsibility, and displacement. This is a Buddhistic film in a way: one character spouts Buddhistic koans, and the main character briefly mentions the Wim Wenders film Perfect Days, often seen as Buddhistic in its portrayal of a simple life designed to reduce suffering and to maximize acceptance of one's responsibilities toward others. In this film, a person follows a bureaucratic decision that contributes to someone's mortal harm, and then a great deal of personal suffering. Everyone she encounters is advising her to not take responsibility. The film is clearly outlining the Buddhistic guidelines on choosing right action, right speech, right intention, right livelihood, and illustrating how without that awareness suffering may ensue. A film about choices, even mundane professional ones, that may cause harm. E.g., which of the buyers of today's super-sized cars think of how they are reversing the work of millions?
