SIMAS C @simas_eros 18 hrs ago I watched this film because it appears on several lists as the best erotic movie ever made. Honestly, I wouldn’t even rank it among the top ten. That said, I can understand the interest. It has all the makings of an excellent film, but, in my view, the execution leaves a lot to be desired. It’s a nearly four-hour-long movie about the relationship between a young model and an elderly painter; as they work on a piece of art, they touch upon universal themes like life, truth, and art itself. The film could have been truly compelling and relevant had the dialogue possessed more depth, and had the art being created carried a more symbolic and engaging quality. As it stands, the film ends up being a total bore—lacking any significant impact or ideas that might prompt reflection or leave a lasting impression. But what this truly demonstrated is that art cannot be rushed, letting creativity unfold in real time with mindfully scripted integrity by performatively thoughtful conviction. The dramatic subplots express invoked symbolism and concurrent reflection building up to subtle confrontation, meanwhile during the main artistic process displays a gradual character study in the platonically appreciative relationship between a painter and a model’s own self-discovery manifested so gently. Many art films chronicle the artwork(s) for narrative fuel, but this French contemporary classic is patiently, substantially filled to the fullest when considering the humane roots of such with hypnotic empathy by observational yet slightly dissolving (or fading) means. Similarly to write a book or make a sculpture. By these metrics, a movie about Rodin would have a duration of thirty days. Much better movies have an approval rate of 70 or 80 percent as opposed to one hundred here. Unless the critics want to show us that they totally get a “difficult “ movie by a famous director. Nice restoration on the Cohen channel. See more Kate H @RT86173718 May 24, 2025 The acting & casting is perfect. I love long, lingering movies. I am an artist & a poet. AND a fan of all of the literary works cited as inspiration--James, Balzac, Wilde--so Why didn't this do it for me? yes--a deep look at the model/artist relationship--down to the smallest details --the scene where F. arranges his pens, clears the space off surfaces, while Marianne waits -- as if she doesn't exist--is brilliant--but like many of the scene (sorry) just goes on too long. I HATED the sound of that scratching pen! I wanted him to be working in oils :) I am someone who enjoyed "Giovanni Fabulouso" -- which my partner at Venice film Festival thought was as riveting as paint drying-- but there the film-maker captured the still ness in the creative process-- the daydreaming that is the gestation--without boring us to tears. or me anyway. All I can think is that Beart's flawless beauty mesmerized all those male critics. Worth sitting through the other 3 hours for an hours worth of her nudity--. I did love watching Birkin--& seeing the traces of her daughter Charlotte in her-- See more Courtney K @c0urtn3y Nov 11, 2024 HOW does this have any good reviews? this movie had absolutely no business being 4 hours long & that old man had absolutely no need for a model; I could've made chicken scratch like that with my eyes closed. See more Nawt W @RT94004908 Dec 24, 2023 One-dimensional portrayal of jealousy expressed by supposed adults with a mental capacity of kindergarten inhabitants, whose entire years-long relationships ostensibly crumble at a foundation in a span of hours because, my dears, art is a window into the soul, and to capture that window we need sacrifices.
