Critics Consensus

Last Days in the Desert offers enough stately grandeur and spiritual exploration to offset an occasionally ambiguous narrative.

Last Days in the Desert drags a little too long, but is interesting in its consideration of Jesus as a man, not only a religious figure. Go to Full Review Steven D. Greydanus Crux May 27, 2016

A promising exercise in a style of film-making I'd like to see more of, but it's a promise somewhat unfulfilled. Go to Full Review Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle May 19, 2016

Last Days in the Desert is a Jesus story that plays well for the nonfaithful who nevertheless appreciate the example of Jesus and his teachings. Go to Full Review Matt Oakes Silver Screen Riot Oct 14, 2026

García delivers some surprisingly compelling, though sleepy, material for a "Jesus in the Desert" art film. Go to Full Review Hosea Rupprecht Pauline Media Studies Aug 27, 2021
I found it fascinating that the filmmakers chose to use the same actor for both Jesus and the Devil. Go to Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Sep 30, 2020

Last Days in the Desert is surely one of the most visually astounding yet unremarkable portraits of the historical personality. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Aaron P @Aaron5466 Jan 23, 2024 One of my top five favorite films. See more Paulami A @RT49213247 Jun 4, 2023 A powerful storytelling! Conversations between Jesus & Satan, Jesus & others felt like theatre performance. Ewan McGregor has been one of the actors known for being fluid & effortless, with this he takes a giant leap. And I am not a Christian! See more Dec 1, 2020 Great film and Jesus is very real & should all listen to his word for eternal life. See more May 17, 2020 I liked a lot this non-preachy portrayal of Jesus in his 40 days in the desert. It shows him as a human person without superpowers, he doesn't revive nor perform miracles; that is left to the audience interpretation. But if he doesn't have miracles, can Jesus still be good? His role is the one of an observer rather than mesiah. He gives advice but leaves the choice of wheter taking it, or up to the person that is listening. His temptation is helping, rather than leaving the humanity run it's course. I'm not a religious person, I don't believe in god. But like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Planet of the Apes, Back to the Future, or any good story. But I take to hearth the moral of the story. It interestingly feels like a spiritual sequel to other Ewan McGregor characters like Obi-wan Kenobi from the Star Wars prequels (an exile struggling with choosing not to help) and Doctor Sleep (he gives peace to the dying people).
