Phil H. @PapercutsAndJumpcuts 4d It’s a rainy Saturday afternoon movie. Fun, watchable, right in my wheelhouse….. honor, loyalty, slow-burn revenge, Clive Owen doing Clive Owen things. It knows what it is and mostly delivers. It’s predictable. You know what it is. That’s okay… on a rainy Sat. BUT… pick a lane at the end. SPOILER ALERT. You can’t spend two hours building toward a clear sacrifice & then hedge with ambiguity. The wife scene suggests one outcome. The emperor scene suggests another. And instead of landing either, it fades out and calls it depth. It’s not depth. It’s indecision. Give me the tragedy, or give me the reprieve. I’ll take either. But not both, and not neither. As is, it’s a familiar romp that I cannot recommend entirely because they ducked the ending. Not good per se… but a somewhat entertaining movie.…. That just needed five more seconds of courage. I’ve watched this movie too many times to count. The beginning scene where Morgan freeman is killed always makes me cry. I especially love that they avenged their master and reclaimed his honor. Must watch and well made movie in my opinion! See more Beau G @RT66266618 Sep 28 No idea why this movie gets such bad reviews. It's not an amazing movie, by far, but it's definitely not bad. It's just a western variation of the 47 Ronin, though still directed by a Japanese director. The same people giving this movie such bad reviews are probably the same ones who think "The Acolyte" or "Rings of Power" are 5* shows. Clive Owen does a fantastic job, though Morgan Freeman was definitely wasted potential. The movie just doesn't utilize him enough. Worth the watch.
