See more Bobby B @RT44852718 Aug 15 When this movie first came out i was ten years old and saw it in the theater. I was overwhelmed by the realism of the scenes and the whole pov of the Indians. The clubbing and eating of the dog, the heart-lung shot that spewed blood. It wasn't your typical western with the cowboys vs the indians. I was quite blown away by the whole thing. 50 years later, I went back and saw it again. I couldn't watch the whole thing. Like a lot of movies and actors that I adored when i was young, the years haven't been good to it. Now, I see through the contrived, dated story line. So many things have been done better since the time of this movie. I realise more and more how brainwashed we all were by the inherent cultural zeitgeist in the media of the late 60s and early 70s. It was partly driven by commercial influences. The westerns that i truly love now are the spaghetti westerns that can laugh at themselves. A wonderful western telling some really - although possibly embellished historical fiction. Would love for the people of the 2024 and younger crowd to see how movies used to have action and real stories to them. The acting is spearheaded by Dustin Hoffman and Chief Dan George who have great chemistry and Hoffman balances being charming, naïve, humorous, and above all else likeable throughout. Custer is a really good villain as well. The closest I can somewhat describe his character and the tone of this film is a Western version of Being There (1979) for the most part. The cinematography is excellent with plenty of beautiful shots, memorable scenes, and a great final battle. The music is very good though I wouldn't call it catchy but it is memorable for its bluesy country mix. The editing is excellent and always focused on Hoffman throughout and PERFECTLY balances humor, drama, and character development that a large chunk of the time I can't tell if this is being a satire or serious and it blends perfectly. It absolutely is a Western first though and a comedy satire second. It also in a sense is a satire demystifying the west as well. The comedy is very clever and gets consistent chuckles throughout but never crosses over into slap stick or outright comedy if that makes sense. It's a great balance between fun, laughs, and drama. This all leads to beautiful pacing throughout and weaves between drama and comedy seamlessly. Anyone should give this a try once. It is such a colorful, entertaining movie that brings humor into a story that is overall filled with tragedy. I don't know about its historic authenticity, but it opens one's eyes to the failures of the early American government to understand and accommodate the natives who were here before they were.
