Critics Consensus

The Lost World demonstrates how far CG effects have come in the four years since Jurassic Park; unfortunately, it also proves how difficult it can be to put together a truly compelling sequel.

Like the original, the sequel is uneven, sometimes moving in fits and starts. But the new film never really loses its momentum, and its big set pieces deliver.

There's not much story or character development here, but you don't need that when you've got dynamite dinosaurs of all stripes and appetites.

It's sheer claptrap, but it's lively claptrap, with Spielberg skillfully reaching into his bag of shameless tricks to reinvent the chase movie and the cliffhanger.

Arguably the meanest film Steven Spielberg has ever made, this would work if it weren’t also just so smugly disinterested or if it had a point to make rather than meandering through middling themes and second-tier setpieces.

It deals with the consequences of the first film's events and is not afraid to work as an occasionally bloody and frequently tense thriller rather than as a fantasy adventure for all ages. [Full review in Spanish].

Visually and thematically darker than its precursor, The Lost World is canned entertainment. It lacks the wonder of the first film, perhaps an inevitability. What's more of a letdown is that it lacks the first one's heart.

Worse than the last movie, but still a great movie. There is just a lot of scenes where they're not on the island.

While not a perfect sequel, it lives up to the original really well and I love the action sequences.

Definitely not as good as its predecessor, but it has a good premise, amazing execution, and Eddie’s death is still brutal to this day, and the CGI, much like its predecessor, still is incredibly well done, even for its time. 9/10
