Maria Q @MariaQe 2d Lucky Number Slevin is the cinematic equivalent of walking into a bar wearing a great suit, ordering a drink you can’t pronounce, and discovering everyone in the room has been waiting for you. It’s slick, funny, stylish, and gloriously full of itself in the best possible way. The characters are terrific, the dialogue crackles, and the cast looks like they’re having an absolute blast tossing clever lines at each other while the plot quietly rearranges the furniture behind your back. Josh Hartnett is effortlessly cool, Bruce Willis is having fun being Bruce Willis, and Lucy Liu brings just enough warmth to keep the whole beautifully twisted machine from becoming too smug. A sharp, entertaining little puzzle box of a movie. Come for the swagger, stay for the twists, and try not to look too closely at the Kansas City Shuffle. Ben Kingsley brings the menace. Then the movie starts peeling back the layers like an onion with a body count. Sharp dialogue. Great twists. Enough double-crosses to make trust issues feel like a superpower. Everybody gets played. Except the audience. We get popcorn. Josh Hartnett is effortlessly cool, Bruce Willis is basically human smirk, and the whole cast talks like they’ve been waiting their entire lives for the chance to verbally stab somebody. The dialogue is ridiculously quotable, the twists keep twisting, and the movie has enough swagger to make a chessboard feel like a crime scene. It’s slick, funny, violent, and just smug enough to get away with it. Lucky Number Slevin doesn’t merely have a plot, it has a fucking attitude. And by the time everything clicks into place, you’ll want to rewind the whole damn thing and watch it again. See more Kris G @RT77773133 Aug 26 This is one of those films that is actually brilliantly done. So many people claim it rips off Taratino and I think that sells this movie far too short. The dialogue is fantastic, the set pieces are gorgeous, and the twist everyone claims is predictable, but is still incredibly satisfying. Perhaps could a director's cut make it a bit harder to figure out ahead of time? Sure. Maybe. However, if you go into this film with no expectations and just want to have a good time, this film truly delivers quite the payoff. Is it the best film ever? Maybe not, but the critics here clearly are wrong, this is in no way trying to copy Pulp Fiction, it is its own thing. Why the critics loved The Departed but scoff at this film is puzzling to me. The Departed was absurdly fast paced in some sequences and gave little breathing room for some plot points. Meanwhile, Lucky Number Sleven gives everything balance and room to breathe with action and dialogue.
