Young lovers Walter (Tom Hanks) and Anna (Shelley Long) are house-sitting the New York City apartment owned by Max (Alexander Godunov), Anna's ex-husband, who suddenly decides to toss them out. Needing a new home, they settle on buying a country estate outside the city, which is available for a suspiciously low price. It soon becomes apparent why, as doors fall off their hinges, staircases come tumbling down and a bathtub falls through the floor. The couple's relationship suffers similarly.

A movie that contains one funny scene and 91 minutes of running time to kill.

B-

It might not be revolutionary cinema, but The Money Pit is stupid fun all these years later. More than anything, it’s a testament to the longevity of Hanks and how far he has come.

Not only Tom Hanks and Shelley Long share a fantastic chemistry, the physical humor (full of brilliant set pieces) is first-rate and allows Hanks to show off his impeccable comedy chops.

Films like these are much more valid than all the comedies by Judd Apatow and Adam Sandler combined. [Full Review in Spanish]

The film would have been a lot better had there been a much stronger script that didn't seem to be straining to keep the basic idea alive.

The third act completely falls apart and makes this not worth watching. The girlfriend gets upset and leaves because her boyfriend is angry with her for sleeping with her ex, or so she thought. Was this really an unreasonable reaction in the 80s?

One of my all-time favorite comedies! The combination of Hanks & Long + house hijinks is comedy gold! Screw the critics! They know nothing about entertaining movies!

Tom Hanks plays a likable lawyer named walter. Shelley Long plays a struggling musician named anna. They are living in a posh Manhattan apartment owned by her ex. Unfortunately they have to vacate the premises. They then decide to search for their dream house. It starts out as a unrealistic dream. And turns into a realistic nightmare. They are duped into buying a house that seems too good to be true. However the house turns out to be a money pit. The Shirk Brothers are are satirical but accurate look at contractors. Who say that it will be a simple 2-week job but it turns into a 6-month fun-tasco. It's hard to pick one funny moment in this movie. The whole movie is hilarious from start to finish. It's one of the best movies of the '80s. If not one of the funniest. Like the big '80s the film is over the top & goes to extremes. But it's a movie that everybody can relate to we've all been in The money pit at one time or another. This is one movie you can Bank on.

If you don't think this is possibly one of the greatest comedies of all time, then you probably have more money than brains. Whenever I think I've seen it too many times to ever laugh at it again, it ALWAYS proves me wrong! It combines nostalgia, reality, and absurdity in the best way possible!

Sold! This movie taught me don't dive in to things too quickly and think you're getting a great deal when you're really getting a lemon.
