While out hunting, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds the grisly aftermath of a drug deal. Though he knows better, he cannot resist the cash left behind and takes it with him. The hunter becomes the hunted when a merciless killer named Chigurh (Javier Bardem) picks up his trail. The folksy characters typical of the Coens’ work are perfectly juxtaposed against the ruthlessness of Bardem’s incomparable performance. Both the landscape and soundscape are simultaneously barren and rich, mirroring the understated yet powerful dialogue.

Whether the Coens have made better movies is subject to opinion but there is something incontrovertible about No Country’s status as god-tier filmmaking. Repeat viewings do nothing to lessen its staggering power.

No Country for Old Men is the rare adaptation that understands Cormac McCarthy instead of translating him! That’s vital here. The Coens don’t explain the book, they let it sit there & stare at you. Tommy Lee Jones — so good here — isn’t chasing a killer so much as realizing the rules he lived by never actually protected anyone. Javier Bardem is a monster… but a patient, almost polite one, which is why every scene he’s in feels predetermined the moment it starts. It’s terrifying, as is his haircut. The film is excellent, but I have to note the novel goes deeper into the silence afterward - into the loneliness of outliving your understanding of the world. The movie leaves you shaken. The book leaves you older.

Javier Bardem is terrifyingly believable as a realistic psychopath (even studies have called it the most clinically accurate depiction). He turns quiet menace into pure dread without ever raising his voice. Amazing movie!
