Critics Consensus

Bolstered by powerful lead performances from Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, and Tommy Lee Jones, No Country for Old Men finds the Coen brothers spinning cinematic gold out of Cormac McCarthy's grim, darkly funny novel.

Roger Deakins’s cinematography is as much a star of the film as any of the cast.

The lack of respect for the body, the sheer bloody aftermath depresses me. Yes, they may handle the killing with verve and ironic tension, but this is a Coen brothers film too far.

The fact that the story is set in 1980 changes absolutely nothing: McCarthy and the Coen brothers deliver a chilling portrait of the essence, the root, the very seed of American society. [Full review in Spanish]

No Country for Old Men is a delirious drama that often echoes such classics as Psycho, Touch of Evil, and Chinatown.

The folksy characters typical of the Coens’ work are perfectly juxtaposed against the ruthlessness of Bardem’s incomparable performance. Both the landscape and soundscape are simultaneously barren and rich, mirroring the understated yet powerful dialogue.

This movie is a modern classic. It is my favorite cat and mouse movie and Javier Bardem’s performance is obviously spectacular! I cannot say anything bad about this movie. 10/10

Cinematography: Spectacular. Acting: Superb. This is one of the greatest crime movies I have ever seen and has such a great story. It shows you the realistic way something like this would happen in real life instead of sugar coating it and making it a good VS. evil Hollywood showdown which I love.

I get that this is a good movie, but too slow of a burn with too little payoff for me.

This movie was definitely something unique and special and you can just feel like it’s a part of cinema history. The story is great and the characters are really well done. The plot twist was something I’ve never seen done the way it was done before in a movie, it still has me thinking about it.
