See more Par H @Parhwy Mar 27 Nosferatu (1923) is an 85-minute-long German, silent horror film I saw on YouTube Free in March 2026. It took two sittings to finish this film. Silent movies are draining for me because to get what the plot, the story, and the characters are all doing, I must carefully, intently watch the actor’s faces, body posture, hand movements. It’s a sign language. It’s also draining because I am often thinking, "What did 1923 film goers think of this… and that?" Like, Orlok is so obviously, grotesquely abnormal (except when wearing a hat) that it’s beyond horror, it’s laughable. Says me who cannot watch Friday the 13th, Scary Movie, Halloween, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There is no jump-scare in this film. It’s all mood and morals. There is some clever editing for telepathy and ghosting scenes. That said, some edits are discourteous, even for the attentive viewer. Day and dark are hard to differentiate sometimes. Rewatch? There hadn’t been anything like it before, and with good reason. Even as silent cinema, F. W. Murnau’s classic retains an at times frightening, gothic atmosphere as well as a constant sense of tension and dread. The film is arguably superior to the more official efforts by Universal and Hammer. Those versions focused exclusively on the identity of the vampire and his romantic qualities. Murnau’s film treated its lead character as an alien figure from a far-off land who poisons everything he comes into contact with. It’s an amazing interpretation and timely when you consider how affected those involved with the production were, having just gone through the atrocities of World War I. That history is important with a film like this. In terms of adapting vampires to the screen, the unofficial adaptation proves to be the most superior because while Orlock is a fantasy creation, the horrors he represents were not. The silent film provides a wonderful break from most modern horror movies, while still providing an enjoyable watching experience.
