Critics Consensus

Don't expect any musical insights, but this look at John Lennon's early life benefits from its restrained, low-key approach and some fine acting from Aaron Johnson.

It is perfectly accomplished, and pleasing enough, but it's not going to blow your socks off, even though the combination of Ms Taylor Wood and such a compelling story would give you every reason to think it might.

The acting all round is pretty good, but the story itself is given to a sense of drift, as if the film itself doesn't know any better than Lennon what it wants.

Taylor-Wood has specialized in video installations and off-kilter portraits, and it was tempting to hope that her take on Lennon would unsettle and provoke. Instead, she stays resolutely on-kilter, as if awed into numbness by her subject.

Nowhere Boy, with all its quirky vagueness, at least offers a nostalgic charge reminiscent of the old Liverpool of Penny Lane. [Full review in Spanish]

For any massive fans of The Beatles then this is a must-see. The filmmakers also manage to carefully and effectively replicate the lates 50s and early 60s era in great attention to detail.

A film of image over substance, something Lennon himself spent a lifetime rejecting. The film not only ignore that, it betrays it.

Good story telling of Lennon's teenage years, with probably a little bit of melodrama thrown in than what actually happened. The movie is rated R because apparently Lennon was also a naughty boy before he became more popular than Jesus Christ.

The emotional confrontation near the end between John's Mom & his Aunt is quite something, very sad. Gut wrenching.

Every now and then I will come back to this movie and I think it is because it is so good and does such a good job at portraying John lennon's early life. that being said I think they could have found a better actor for George and Paul but overall 10/10

“Nowhere Boys” This film is a movie about the life of John Lennon. It tracks his life as a young boy born in UK raised by his aunt whom he affectionately called Mimi. The film was very well done and the acting was really good music was pretty decent giving these were actors doing the singing. The setting the background the black and white filming all very pertinent to the film given the time of John Lennon’s early days. So with that in mind if you’re a true beetle fan then you’ll love the story of John Lennon.

This movie was exceptional. Very well done. Even though it was filled with music, I loved how it didn’t really get into The Beatles (and I’m a huge Beatles fan), but really stuck to John’s painful story. It was beautifully acted and directed. Very moving. Cinematography was was wonderful. Just a great movie all around. A true story of human frailty and love.
