Critics Consensus

It may not live up to its classic source material, but The Omega Man transcends its limitations often enough to offer some mildly entertaining post-apocalyptic thrills.

In adapting Richard Matheson's novel I Am Legend, the film loses the original's quiet paranoia and rethink of the vampire theme, but it has quite a lot of gritty flair. Go to Full Review

The second screen adaptation of Richard Matheson’s haunting novel ‘I Am Legend’ stars Heston as the last man on Earth (or so he believes) after a plague turns the populace into night-dwelling albino vampires. Go to Full Review

Filmmaker Boris Sagal, working from a script by John William and Joyce H. Corrington, delivers an erratically-paced yet generally entertaining sci-fi endeavor that benefits from Heston's commanding, ingratiating performance... Go to Full Review

The film s a pretty terrible direct translation of what is one of the easiest-to-adapt-to-screen books I've ever read. But it doesn't want to be the novel. It has something else on its mind. Go to Full Review

Robert P @Superbad 2d Not a bad movie, but this concept has been used before! See more B P @Bradster69 4d Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more K G @KatyG-S Aug 21 The first try of "I Am Legend". When it came to adaptations from Warner Bros, its title is different from the original book & then comes a new adaptation with more faith. There will be points to my preference on "I Am Legend" (2007). Dr Robert Neville is still a brave face & daring to hunt down albino mutants with his main character energy. More positive things, I loved the the empty trashed site of the street proving life was well abandoned with some upsetting silence from a birds eye view. What hilariously lets things down is how the albino mutants are depicted as just normal humans powdered of white, which do not look so threatening at all, as if they were in the old Batman show. Those vibes. See more Keith B B @Okbullard Feb 9 It was pretty bad and not worth your time. I saw it in the 70s and couldn't remember much about it including it I liked it. Now I know, don't bother. See more Jason H @RT50328122 Sep 7 The only good thing about this movie: it made me want to read the book it's based on for the first time. I Am Legend is now my favorite book, Richard Matheson is my favorite writer, and all three of the movie adaptations have stunk. See more Mitch B @RT97279008 07/17/2025 The gritty flair and the fight that this version of events was caused by a nulcear war makes it stand out.. See more Read all reviews
