Critics Consensus

It's occasionally uneven, but On the Count of Three finds director/star Jerrod Carmichael attempting an ambitious blend of drama and dark comedy -- and often succeeding.

Simultaneously funny, depressing, and life-affirming, On the Count of Three isn’t a macabre masterpiece like, say, Barry, but it scratches a similar itch.

Very well acted, with a refreshingly dark sense of humour and briskly paced, the film impresses on a number of levels.

Comfort has never felt more discomforting than it does in On the Count of Three, a profound new comedy about suicide, mental health, depression, and the absurd lengths we go to help the strange people we love.

On the Count of Three has negative interest in being a morality play; a decision that arguably contributes the most to the film’s refreshing, compassionately transgressive attitude on suicide.

Jerrod Carmichael has found his niche in On the Count of Three. He takes this script with confidence and quite frankly, directs the hell out of it.

On the Count of Three has a number of interesting ideas at play. While the film doesn’t always work, the performances of Carmichael and Abbott are enough to see it through to the end.

Loved this movie from start to finish. It is no Hollywood bang bang type of movie but what a great story of love, brotherhood and friendship as well as redemption. I thought this movie was amazing. Loved the noir feel of it peppered with fantastic subtle comedy and even surprise appearances by Tiffany Haddish and Henry Winkler. The only flaw was it was too short. I couldve watched this story unfold all day long. Great performances by the two leading characters. Appreciated the references to race relations and acceptance. This movie goes to show you - you never know what is going on with your neighbor, the person in line at the store next to you or even your own family members. Treat people with kindness as you do not know their circumstances. Great directing debut for Jerrod Carmichael!

It’s what you get. Heavy for sure. That black guy was crazy to pull out- even though he total brain washed that white kid who was in a hospital. I woulda done the same if i were the black guy go, i called the ending. Weird, don’t kill yourself kids
