A novel if earnest cross-genre thriller.

An ambitious next-generation spin on the found-footage genre, Population Zero starts out like an indie version of a true-crime TV news magazine and turns into a horror-tinged drama with a topical slant.

if the story that Pinder pursues seems incredible, nonetheless he uses his experimental form to expose a different kind of truth that is actually very close to his interests as a documentarian.

Overall, "Population Zero" is a film with an interesting subject but an execution that loses steam until that one scene near the end.

This low budget film is a shrewd, rebellious work of art that takes a complex idea and executes it exceptionally well. There's much to admire in its ambitious spirit.

Population Zero edges towards disappointing its audience, but is interesting enough in its early stages to make it a worthwhile watch, and certainly one of the better mock-documentaries you will come across.

Terrible acting. Something very weird happened in production to cause every line delivery to sound fake and stilted. Oof.

Smelled of Blair With Trials from the begging to end. Presented as a documentary, but actually theater, and not very good theater. Waste of time.

The documentarian is the typical douche bag narcissist who has to make the film about him. The last 30 minutes are almost unwatchable as this self indulgent dbag gives us all his personal b.s. and waaaaay too many shots of his ugly face with his monstrous nose.

There is a good chance that most viewers will respond with "huh" at the end of Population Zero. Not a "huh" with a question mark and not a "huh" with an exclamation mark – just sort of a resigned "huh" to signify a bit of confusion. There's no doubt that the story itself is interesting, but it's hard to figure out why it was done as a mockumentary, which usually works best in satires or horror flicks. It becomes evident fairly early that these are actors and from that point on it becomes a bit of a distraction wondering why it wasn't done as a straight-up thriller. Regardless, there's enough here to keep things interesting, but the ending, while probably morally correct, leaves you thinking "really? This is what this thing is all about?"

Excellent! With a twist that no one expects....not even at the end. It's one way to get the truth out.
