Critics Consensus

Repo Man is many things: an alien-invasion film, a punk-rock musical, a send-up of consumerism. One thing it isn't is boring.

As a first feature to be written and directed by Alex Cox, an Englishman living in the United States, Repo Man must be considered a commendable achievement, though ultimately it fails to sustain its initial promise of an original subject and style.

Repo Man is the saltiest, sweetest, most sublimely sleazy tickle in the Los Angeles ribs. If it doesn't convulse you with belly laughs, then you're a stiff.

A playful mood informs Repo Man, yet Cox also takes time to comment on the seamy side of LA as well as the problems inherent in a decade that so baldly worships Reagan, L. Ron Hubbard, and TV evangelists.

In the end Repo Man, for all its energy, doesn't come off. But Cox is a film-maker of style and promise whose next film we await with interest.

This gets even better every time I see it and it is low key one of my all time favorites. My favorite Emilio Estevez performance, an award caliber, outstanding performance from the great Harry Dean Stanton and the best punk movie of all time. Brilliant, subtle satire on consumerism and conformity. It has a killer soundtrack, looks incredible for its low budget and the direction by Alex Cox is gloriously gritty and fantastic. A great supporting cast helps too. This is not only a cult classic but a pure comedy classic! Plus it’s one of the best action movies of all time.

I love when an opening scene makes you wonder what the hell you are watching. Repo Man is wonderfully bizarre and incredibly funny. It is a truly original gem that can be watched over and over again.

A terrific punks and aliens collaboration. I loved this when it came out, and I love it more on my 2026 rewatch.

The more times I watch this delight, the more I like it. It's surreal, gritty, comedic, the cinematography makes LA look like Philly. The soundtrack is perfect.
