B P @Bradster69 4d Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more TheFilmCritics @TheFilmCritics Aug 29 When the doors slam shut, Resident Evil wastes little time turning its underground laboratory into a stylish B-movie pressure cooker. The film benefits from its claustrophobic production design, brisk pacing, energetic action, and Milla Jovovich’s commanding physical presence, making its zombies, monsters, and corporate skulduggery reasonably entertaining. Yet beneath the slick surface, the film is decidedly thin: the characters lack depth, the twists become increasingly muddled, and its modest scares rarely generate genuine suspense. Its loose relationship with the video game may also frustrate fans expecting a faithful adaptation. However, Resident Evil ultimately succeeds in understanding its mission—to deliver glossy, fast-moving creature-feature thrills—and largely succeeds, even if its style proves more infectious than its substance. Who cares if its not perfect, Milla Jovovich is cool in it, the Marco Beltrami/ Manson score rocks and I really like the second half with the licker running around causing chaos.
